Can I Fly To Turkey On Non Machine Readable Passport Using Klm Dutch Airline?

I am planning to visit Turkey and already have applied for visa and going to get my passport back in couple of days. Turkish embassy did not raise any issue but KLM (booked flight with them) say that I would need MRP (machine readable passport) to fly. I think this information is wrong. My country only started giving MRPs out in 2006. They cannott expect every one to have new passport in just 2 years.
Has anyone travelled recently using KLM to anywhere (or Turkey) on a non machine readable passport? (machine readable passport has two lines of text under you photo).
Any help or guidance would be much appreciated.
